Have you ever been to Old Chang Kee and enjoyed their Singaporean / Malaysian curries or tucked into one of their famous curry puffs? No, then I highly recommend as they are so “SHIOK”.
Old Chang Kee curry puffs can be found within both their London based restaurants as well as various other restaurants from around the world.
However at present whilst we are all in lock down due to Covid-19 their London based business are home delivering them frozen to cook at home. I was kindly gifted four different kinds to cook and enjoy at home in return for an honest review.
Old Chang Kee
Old Chang Kee originally started in 1956 as a small market stall in Singapore selling curry puffs which became legendary amongst Singaporeans and those who’ve lived in or visited the country. With the success of their curry puff’s they set up a further 90 outlets across Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Australia, where customers travelled far and wide to savour the inimitable curry puff. Passing down from generation to generation Old Chang Kee sells over 1.5m curry puffs a month Worldwide. However the secret curry recipe is only known to a select few and is protected and locked in a bank vault.
The iconic curry puff is lighter than a Cornish pasty, crispier, buttery and filled with a warming meat, potato along with a secret combination of herbs and spices gives an aromatic curry. With the flavour being quite mild even children can enjoy the delicious curry puff.
“The curry puff is Singapore’s version of the Cornish pasty, but more fiery.” says Ms Sandra Leong, Director of Old Chang Kee UK.
Plus they sell curries as well as other Singaporean / Malaysian cuisine.
Shiok
Home delivered I received a bag full of delight from frozen curries as well as their famous curry puffs all which was packaged well.
I have enjoyed their curry puffs before so I was excited to be able to taste their curry puffs at home and to see how different they might taste from freshly baked ones.
Curry Puffs
Gifted four different frozen curry puffs and unpacking them each they all were beautifully intact still as you can see from below.

It was then on into a preheated oven at 180 degrees for 30-35 minutes. Check that once cooked that the filling is 75 degrees or piping hot before eating.

Upon taking them out of the oven they smelt amazing, looked beautiful and once cutting into them you could see it was jam packed full of ingredients.
Cutting into shortcrust Curry Potato Puff I loved how it held it’s shape and how beautifully packed it was with potato. The spices within this vegetarian puff was a sheer delight from the soft potato chunks from the hits of ginger, curry, chilli and others spices. Plus the pastry was a sheer buttery delight not greasy at all and had a lovely crunch but also a lovely buttery softness.

Curries
The five gifted different pre frozen curries came nicely packed in plastic boxes making it easy to store in the freezer.

You can either cook on a low temperature on the hob or microwave. Just make sure that the food is a a temperature of over 75 degrees.
This curry is their Dry Chicken Curry. This curry was a lovely mild curry with which consisted with nice bite size lumps of white chicken and small pieces of soft potato cubes giving the whole dish various textures. Very tasty.

Full ingredients: Chicken, potatoes, curry leaf, curry powder, channa dhal flour, cumin powder, turmeric powder, cinnamon powder, coriander powder, chilli powder, fennel powder, black pepper, candlenuts (nuts), yellow ginger powder, salt, minced ginger, chilli powder, sugar, mint leaf and vegetable oil (soy).
Suitable for Halal, Gluten Free and Dairy Free.
Their Chicken Rendang is full of large chunks of brown moist chicken meat. The curry is nutty, has a buttery sweetness and a little bit spicy.

Suitable for Halal.
This Jackfruit Rendang is loaded with big pieces of jackfruit and coated in a hot spicy sauce. The jackfruit texture is similar to a banana, mango, or pineapple in terms of being dense and fibrous. A very interesting dish as I usually don’t like jackfruit but this curry I particularly loved I think the sauce helped make the jackfruit taste a lot nicer even though the sauce was quite overpowering for my tastebuds.

Their Singapore Signature Chicken Curry has lovely pieces of white chunks of chicken and large pieces of potato making this is a very moorish and filling. Plus the sauce was quite mild in flavour so made it very easy to eat and easy on my tastebuds as I am not one for very spicy curries.
Suitable for Vegetarian, Vegan, Dairy Free and Gluten Free

Full ingredients: Chicken, potatoes, evaporated milk, water, candlenuts (nuts), plain flour (wheat gluten), curry powder, channa dhal flour, cumin powder, tumeric powder, cinnamon powder, coriander powder, chilli powder, fennel powder, black pepper, yellow ginger, ginger powder, salt, minced ginger, chilli powder, sugar, mint leaf and vegetable oil (soy).
Suitable for Halal.
This Tofu and Mixed Vegetable Curry is loaded with a mix of julienne vegetables and chunks of tofu. This is the only curry out of all their curries I was not that keen on as was quite spicy and I did not like the tofu, it was like eating pieces of sponge. However I did love the vegetables within as fresh and soft.

Full ingredients: Tofu (soy), cabbage, carrot, fine beans, coconut milk, candlenuts (nuts), water, curry powder, channa dhal flour, cumin powder, tumeric powder, cinnamon powder, coriander powder, chilli powder, fennel powder, black pepper, yellow ginger, ginger powder, salt, minced ginger, chilli powder, sugar, mint leaf and vegetable oil (soy).

Yum yum
I was really impressed by Old Chang Kee London curry puffs and curries.
All their curry puffs are shiok and in particular the Curry Potato Puff which was packed full of potato which was a real tasty treat from the filling to the pastry.
The curries I loved most of them apart from the tofu one but my favourite was the Singapore Signature Chicken Curry as was loaded with chunks of white chicken and large pieces of potato and all within a mild curry sauce. Loved it.
So if you are craving a curry puff or curry I highly recommend ordering with Old Chang Kee. Their full menu and price list can be found on their website and ordering is made easy or call them.
