Crystal Maze for those who don’t know what it is

The Crystal Maze is a British game show which was devised by Jacques Antoine, in which a team of six contestants take on a range of challenges set within a labyrinth of the same name consisting of four time zones, winning a time crystal for each one they successfully complete. Reaching the centrepiece of the Maze, The Crystal Dome, the team work together collecting a certain amount of gold tokens to win a prize, with the allotted time inside the Dome. However there are silver tokens as well which will result in deducting gold tokens collected making it harder to accumulate the amount of gold tokens needed to win the game and win a prize.

It was first broadcast on Channel 4 in the United Kingdom, and was aired for over six series with five Christmas specials. The first four series and three specials were hosted was aired in 1990-1993 by Richard O’Brien, with the remaining two series and specials aired from 1993-1995 and hosted by Edward Tudor-Pole.

In 2016 Crystal Maze was bought back fora charity special hosted by Stephen Merchant named Stand Up to Cancer.

Then in 2017 Crystal Maze returned with a newly revamped series hosted by Richard Ayoade. There were twenty episodes in total consisting of fifteen civilian episodes and five celebrity specials. Then it returned in 2018 with a second series.

Let the game commence

Hooking up with my girlfriends Bianca, Lynsey, Gemma, Jen and Joice via zoom we took on the Crystal Maze in the comfort of our own homes whilst guided through the maze by Maze Master Robert.

We were taken through the four zones from Aztec, Industrial, Futuristic and Medieval! to take on 16 different challenges.

The mission of the game is not to just have fun but to win crystals with each different challenge. As each crystal equals 5 second of time in the dome. There are four different challenge categories in total from skill, physical, mental and mystery.

Starting within the Medieval zone and working our way around the zones we were challenged with numerous puzzles which mostly ended up involving maths. However if you are worried about the challenges especially the maths one don’t worry as your team mates most of the time apart from one or two puzzles you are allowed their help.

These are just some of the tasks we were challenged with:

My favourite was where I had to connect colours by drawing a line to each colour without overlapping the connected lines. The other fun challenge we were faced with was matching two words together making up pub names.

I won 2 crystals in total out of the 3 games I played but in total between us all we collected 5 crystals which gave us 25 seconds of time in the Crystal Dome.

As obviously this is a fan based game played on line the way we played the dome was via each of us shouting stop when we saw a sequence of numbers appear on our screen with some coloured silver and gold.

We ended up with 130 silver and 255 gold. As silver is bad we lost 130 gold so in the end our final count of gold was 126 which made us winners of the night.

Verdict

This is a fun fan based version of The Crystal Maze full of different puzzles was certainly a fun way to hook up with friends and/or family whilst being in lock down due to Covid 19 which is effecting the whole world at present.

Are you clever enough to take on the challenge?
