Chosan baobab jams & spreads with a difference

Bored with your regular jams and chocolate spread and craving something that little different? then look no further as Chosan spreads are the answer! Chosan spreads are made with baobab and 100% natural ingredients.

Thanks to my friends Dip_and_Sip they gifted me a new variety of jams and spreads by Chosan to taste at home all of which were equally as delicious.

Chosan

Founder Eliza from Gambia wanted to bring jams and spreads to the world with a difference so she set up Chosan bringing produce made with baobab and hibiscus. Chosan is a word which means ‘cultural heritage’ in the Wolof language they speak in Gambia.

She always loved the fresh food and drink her auntie would make her. Her auntie used a variety of local fruits without any extracts, colourings or artificial flavourings to make simple jams and spreads.

Inspired by her auntie, Eliza wanted to share her experience with others, and so decided to create her own range of exotic, fresh fruit sorbets, baobab jams, baobab spreads and organic drinks using the same methods as her auntie.

Using fruits and plants indigenous to Africa, Eliza creates delicious Chosan hibiscus and baobab products which not just taste great but pays homage to the rich heritage.

But Chosan is much more than just producing exotic food and drinks. As their commitment is to help support African food producers. In countries like Gambia, fresh fruits are always in abundant supply when they’re in season, but you can’t get hold of them outside of those times. Because of this it is hard then for the farmers to grow fruits and get a good price especially with their being so much competition. On her travels she thought about this a lot while travelling, and it struck her that it would make a huge difference to farmers if they could turn their produce into food and drink with a longer shelf life. So with that she committed herself to help by producing long lasting products using their produce.

What is Baobab?

Baobab is a superfood and known for its health giving properties, including antioxidants which boost the immune system.

Baobab comes in either pulp, powder, or oil. The ingredients are derived from baobab trees cultivated in Africa, Madagascar due to its climate and soil conditions. It is rich in potassium, phosphorus, carbohydrates, and vitamin C.

Their baobab is bought direct from women farmer’s cooperatives in Africa, helping support those low income communities and helping to protect the future of the Baobab tree.

Normally sold in health food shops in powder form, Chosan has combined in their four exciting flavours, Baobab Chocolate Spread, Orange & Baobab Jam, Banana & Baobab Jam, and Baobab Jam with Ginger.

Spread of love

I was excited to receive my samples of Chosan jams and spreads as I don’t think I have ever had any other spread that has been made using baobab making it a healthy superfood spread.

Chosan comes in lovely jars which are each labelled beautifully and has a clear bold statement stating they use baobab and that all ingredients used within the produce is 100% natural.

Chosan exotic jams and spreads are an ideal enriched alternate topping for your toast in the morning for breakfast or on scones for afternoon tea.

I decided to use mine on my homemade biscuits instead which worked beautifully.

As a chocolate lover I just had to start by tasting their chocolate spread first. It smelt amazing and looked creamy, shiny and rich with it’s epic dark colour. Upon grabbing a spoon I spread it over the biscuits I made for my jams and spreads. The chocolate spread did not just taste great, with it’s creamy and rich hit cocoa but the biscuit worked well giving it that extra texture of crunchiness.

The Orange & Baobab Jam upon opening the jar released notes of zesty orange. The jam is smooth and creamy and has a nice taste of orange to it. Just contains four ingredients orange, water, organic raw unrefined cane sugar and baobab. An orange delight.

The Banana & Baobab Jam smells divine of banana of course and again a creamy spread giving hits of banana with every bite. This was an exciting spread as I don’t believe I have had a banana spread before.

Talking of different the Baobab Jam with Ginger was also a unique jam as this spread giving a zingy, punchy, fiery hit of ginger. Fiery and devilishly delicious.

The beauty though in eating any Chosan spread is knowing that it is healthier than most as made from baobab, has no added sugar, gluten free, no palm oil and all ingredients are 100% natural.

Plus with every buy of a Chosan jar 10% from the sale will go towards supporting women food producers in Gambia.

Verdict

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Chosan sell great superfood enriched food and drinks.

I tasted their jams and spreads and all not only tasted amazing but it was nice to know that they all provided health benefits due to the baobab, and that all the other ingredients are 100% natural. Plus that they are helping farmers and communities of Africa.

They have four flavours to suit all the family, made with love in small batches.

Apart from their jams and spreads they also sell sorbets and drinks which uses hibiscus within. Hibiscus comes from a flower and provides health benefits which help with lowering blood pressure. I though have not yet tried the sorbets and drinks from Chosan but I am sure they will be equally as delicious as their jams and spreads.

So if you are looking for a great alternate jam or spread that is tasty but yet healthy at the same time then I highly recommend Chosan.
