SXOLLIE single varietal cider

I am a cider drinker and I could drink it all day, and even more so now after enjoying SXOLLIE ciders as they are so delicious. They produce three single varietal ciders which means they only use one type of apple per bottle. To me cider is better than beer as cider it is much lighter than beer. Beer is made from malted barley whilst cider is made from fermented apple juice making it less gassy and easier to drink.

On a PR basis I was kindly given their variety of cider to taste at home.

SXOLLIE

Founded in 2014 Laura & Karol lovers of cider set up and pioneered their own cider company. They wanted to make cider more than your first drink of summer but your first drink of the night and any time of year.

They produce clean refreshing cider from apples we all know and love (Golden Delicious, Granny Smith & Cripps Pink) giving that taste of apples, not just the sugar as their ciders are single varietal ciders. SXOLLIE single varietal cider means only one type of apple is used per bottle.

Sausages braised in SXOLLIE Cripps Pink Apple cider

Ingredients (serves 2)

  • 454g pork sausages
  • Freshly milled black pepper
  • Olive oil
  • 200g smoked lardons
  • 225g small shallots
  • 1 tbsp plain flour
  • 375ml SXOLLIE Cripps Pink Apple cider
  • 1 clove of garlic, finely chopped
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 rounded tspn fresh chopped thyme, plus a few sprigs
  • 1 medium cox apple, cored and sliced into rings (no need to peel)
  • Butter

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180C / Gas 4.
  2. Heat up the casserole dish on medium heat. Add some olive oil and when hot, place in sausages and brown all over.
  3. Then, using a draining spoon, remove sausages to a plate whilst you then lightly brown off together the lardons and shallots. When that’s done, sprinkle in the flour to soak up the juices, then gradually stir in the SXOLLIE Cripps Pink Apples cider.
  4. Now pop back in the sausages along with the chopped garlic, bay leaf, fresh thyme and thyme sprigs. Add some freshly milled black pepper.
  5. Place lid on as soon as it begins to simmer, then transfer it to the oven for 30 minutes. After that remove the lid and let it continue to cook for a further 20-30 minutes.
  6. 5 minutes before it is time to serve up your sausage casserole fry the apple rings in butter till golden and soft. Garnish the casserole with them.

The sausages were cooked beautifully, shallots soft, followed on by the crunchy apples and all coated in sticky sweet and tangy cider.

SXOLLIE Cripps Pink Apples Poached Apples with Toffee Sauce and Candied Hazelnuts

Ingredients (serves 6)

  • SXOLLIE Cripps Pink Apple cider 1 litre
  • Soft light brown sugar 150g
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 star anise
  • 1 lemon, zested
  • 6 eating apples
  • 1 egg white
  • 50g granulated sugar
  • 100g hazelnuts, roughly chopped
  • 25g butter, melted
  • 300ml double cream
  • 100g soft light brown sugar
  • 75g butter
  • vanilla essence a few drops

Method

  1. Heat together the SXOLLIE Cripps Pink Apple cider with the light brown sugar, spices and lemon zest in a pan. Stir occasionally until the sugar has dissolved.
  2. Peel the apples and add carefully to the hot cider. Bring the cider back to the boil, then turn the heat down and simmer for 20 minutes. Once sharp knife slips easily through the apple take the pan off the heat and leave to cool within the cider.
  3. For the candied hazelnuts heat the oven to 190C / Fan 170C / Gas 5. Whisk the egg white for a minute or so until starting to get stiff, then whisk in the sugar, hazelnuts, and most of the butter and a pinch of salt.
  4. Line a tray with greaseproof paper and spread with the left over butter, then spread over the mixture. Bake for 5-7 minutes or until golden. Cool before breaking it up into small pieces.
  5. For the sauce, gently melt together the cream, light brown sugar, butter and vanilla together in a saucepan. Constantly stir until it bubbles then reduce to simmer and stir until the liquid is thick.
  6. Serve warm with the poached apples. Sprinkle over the candied nuts.

This resulted in a lovely soft, sweet tasting apple. The toffee gave it that extra toffiness making this like a luxurious toffee apple but with a difference.

All of their ciders are extremely tasty and certainly different to any other cider, not complex as each contained just one type of apple and no artificial colours and flavourings giving it a clean refreshing taste. My favourite was the Sxollie Golden Delicious Cider as it was less fizzy than the other ciders and was fruity and sweet, very refreshing and easy on the palate.

Which cider takes your fancy?

Verdict

Rating: 5 out of 5.

SXOLLIE cider you are the apple to my eye.

Their cider is now one of my favourites as they are easy drinking and all taste extremely delicious. They are beautifully bottled up in brown bottles with a bold colourful design. The thing that made SXOLLIE cider special though is that all each of their ciders are just made purely from one bottle with each containing 3 bottles within. Plus with no artificial colours and flavours it gives a clean, refreshing flavour and makes it extremely easy to drink.

So if you are a cider drinker then I highly recommend SXOLLIE ciders.
