The Crystal Maze LIVE Experience start the fans please

Start your fans please, this live fan based version of The Crystal Maze set within London and Manchester allows people just like to be able to participate in Crystal Maze and take on the Crystal Dome at the end. It might not have Richard O’Brien as the host or even Edward Tudor-Pole or even Richard Ayoade. Plus it is not aired and there are no prizes to be won but that does not matter as either way you will feel like you are taking part in the actual popular TV gameshow as the sets / zones are more or less identical, even the games and no matter which games master you get they are passionate, full of energy and beaming personality, giving past TV hosts a run for their money.

I was invited down on a PR basis courtesy to take on the dome and to show me that the games you see on TV are actually tougher than you think.

Crystal Maze for those who don’t know what it is

The Crystal Maze is a British game show which was devised by Jacques Antoine, in which a team of six contestants take on a range of challenges set within a labyrinth of the same name consisting of four time zones, winning a time crystal for each one they successfully complete. Reaching the centrepiece of the Maze, The Crystal Dome, the team work together collecting a certain amount of gold tokens to win a prize, with the allotted time inside the Dome.

It was first broadcast on Channel 4 in the United Kingdom, and was aired for over six series with five Christmas specials. The first four series and three specials were hosted was aired in 1990-1993 by Richard O’Brien, with the remaining two series and specials aired from 1993-1995 and hosted by Edward Tudor-Pole.

In 2016 Crystal Maze was bought back for a charity special hosted by Stephen Merchant named Stand Up to Cancer.

Then in 2017 Crystal Maze returned with a newly revamped series hosted by Richard Ayoade. There were twenty episodes in total consisting of fifteen civilian episodes and five celebrity specials. Then it returned in 2018 with a second series.

The Crystal Maze LIVE Experience

The Crystal Maze LIVE Experience is 75 minutes of frantic, frenetic, silly team fun that’s open to those everybody aged 9 and over.

Your goal is to get as many Crystals as possible which equals time in The Crystal Dome in which you then have to grab gold to score as many points as you can.

Explore four different zones from Industrial, Futuristic, Medieval and Aztec. In each zone, you’ll get to test your skills, solve mysteries and face mental and physical challenges. All of which the games are against the clock, naturally. The more challenges you complete successfully, the more Crystals you win and the more time you’ll have in the Crystal Dome at the end.

Let the game commence

Hooking up with a group of members from LPUL Club we were greeted by our Games Master for the evening in who was buzzing on a high who guided us through the mazes zones.

We visited each of the four zones from Aztec, Industrial, Futuristic and Medieval in which we got to take on to take on 16 different challenges, 2 games each.

Now I always thought when watching contestants on TV how stupid some of them were but believe me I have learnt actually even though a game might look and sound easy it is not always the case.

There are four different challenge categories in total to choose from which is skill, physical, mental and mystery.

With all the games the mission is not just to have fun but to win it as to gain a crystal with equals 5 seconds of time in the dome.

Starting within the Medieval zone and working our way around the zones we were challenged with numerous games from rolling a ball down a plank, clambering through an obstacle course, avoiding laser beams and so much more. So there is a game suitable for all.

As to not spoil the type of games you can play all I will say is that there are plenty which are very similar to the ones seen on TV.

We won 5 crystals in total out of the games we played as a team with one of them being a win from me.

It was not time for the dome, start your fans please. Within the dome on TV there is usually silver tokens as well as gold, with the silver being bad. As on TV if you got any silver it would be deducted from your gold total. The idea was to get over 100 gold to get a prize. However at The Crystal Maze Live Experience there is no silver tokens and no prizes to be won, just pride. We collected a total of 130 between us. Even though it was fun when the fans started and we had a whopping 25 seconds within the dome I would of loved it to be more challenging with silver tokens added into the mix. Never a less I was able to live a dream of mine.

Sneak peak within The Crystal Maze LIVE Experience

Here is a sneak peak from corridors leading into the zones and a sneaky peak of the Aztec zone. Getting from one zone to another though did make me face some of my fears, such as climbing down a ladder and sliding down a slide. So be WARNED if you don’t like ladders or slides!

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

All in all this was a very fun and thrilling experience I loved the games master we had who was certainly a character, the props were excellent making each zone feel like the ones you see on TV such as the floor of the Aztec zone it was covered in real sand, the games were challenging but yet fun and the dome was a thrill was like being in a mini tornado of gold

The only thing I was disappointed about was the size of the venue. Plus the fact that we never got any team jackets to wear like you see on the TV show. They used to as a group of members from LPUL Club went quite a few years back pre-covid and they got to wear jackets. I assume due to covid this is why they don’t supply them anymore.

The Crystal Maze Live Experience is certainly a great event to participate in be it with friends, family or even colleagues.

Question is are you clever enough to take on the challenge?
