“I love going out discovering new and existing restaurants, theatres, immersive experiences and so much more but I also love staying in and discovering new gadgets, gaming and cooking.
I was lucky enough to join one of my friends the other night and experience CoLab theatre’s latest production, “Loot”. It was the first bit of immersive theatre I’d tried and quite simply above and beyond what I’d expected. I’d sign up for another scenario with them again in a heartbeat.
Being keen beans we got there quite early and weren’t allowed in when we arrived – once you play you’ll see why – so turn up as close to your booked time as possible. You can always have a drink in one of the pubs nearby beforehand if you’ve got some time to kill. To start things off someone came out the door incognito to give us instructions and gadgets we’d need for later. After all, it wouldn’t be an authentic dabble in the world of crime without at least one cloak and dagger meeting now would it?. We then met our accomplice for the evening in the back of a van – where all good heists begin – who gave us a briefing about the robbery and we were on our way.
You’ll have to find out for yourselves what follows but as the name suggests the aim if the game is to get your hands on the loot. However, to do so you’ll have to work your way past some (at times scary!) obstacles, meet some colourful characters and solve some riddles whilst covering a fair bit of ground through multiple rooms in the process. I hate to break it to you but you don’t get to keep said “loot”, instead you can enjoy a well-deserved drink and a welcome and unique twist that I imagine not all productions like this have. There was talk of at least one variation of the scenario so even if you play it twice you may get a different experience each time, as is the nature of improv.
Having not done this sort of thing before and lacking in the improv department I felt fairly apprehensive at the beginning but by the end of the 1hr 20 – which flew by! – I was an immersive theatre convert. I was pleasantly surprised how much you genuinely get pulled into it and the actors were brilliant throughout, allowing you to contribute as little or as much as you wanted. As my friend found out, they may allow you to go one step further and really be part of the action so if you’re looking to do something a bit different with your evening I’d highly recommend giving Loot a go. It’s well worth the money and very easy to get to just a short walk from London Bridge tube. There’s space for about 10 players per run so you can book as a large group or play along with others.
Colab are back at their disused Rug Factory warehouse with another amazing immersive theatre production. This time you are in teams of up to 8 and are taken around on an 80 mins fun and intense roller-coaster ride. Here you take on pseudo names and are hired by Mr. Fox to steal ‘the loot’ hidden behind lasers, security men, guard dogs and more.
I think this is my favourite Colab production. However, I seem to say this about each of their productions. It was so much fun to see how they use the space they have. I don’t want to spoil the fun. I will say our pulses were raised as we ducked, hid, scampered and talked our way through the puzzles.
The actors are, as always, perfectly cast. Being there to guide you if needed, but withdrawing to the background when not.
Be aware you are not allowed in early, so if you turn up before your allotted time they may turn you away. There’s a reason for this which, will come clear on the night. There are however local pubs around for you to have a quick pint. There’s also Gatsby night going on in the same building so you may see people dressed up in 1920’s gear.
Overall, it is an amazing experience. Well worth the £18.50 for the ticket.
