Paul Zenon – Linking Rings
Paul Zenon has made regular appearances everywhere from Countdown to La Clique and is known as the UK pioneer of Street Magic (C4’s Turning Tricks, Tricky Christmas, Trick or Treat, ITV’s White Magic).
He will tell a story of Houdini’s right-hand man who deals with the death of his boss. A half century later, the Blackpool joke shop proprietor takes on a wide-eyed young protégé. An affectionate look at a misspent youth and unsung heroes; a touching true story of interlocking lives.
Not a magic show, but magical nonetheless.

“ I watched Ian Rowland – The Mind Man on his last show and it was entertaining. I wouldn’t say it was worth £20 though, but it was good entertainment and an intimate setting. He is a great speaker, funny and has some decent tricks. It was a bit of magic and demystifying certain aspects of magic which was interesting. However, I think it would have been better if he stick to either just being a magic show or demystifying certain things and the whole shebang. I found it a bit weird to have some showmanship for mind tricks to get ‘smart’ such as multiplying double digit numbers ending in 5. “I came here to watch Brendan Rodrigues and it was great. Really made my evening. I sat in the first row with a couple of friends and was really impressed by his sleight of hand magic. Almost everything was like ‘wow’. He is extremely talented with his hands as he showed off with his magic crystal ball which he almost makes float. He is very smooth with all his moves and very charming with his personality. He puts his own flair into some things like finger ballet, which is not a magic trick but just a show of the dexterity of his fingers. He did a routine for romance for a couple with various things appearing, dissapearing and guessing cards. Finally, he did a bar routine where he guessed the cocktail on the sheet of paper. “There is a cool little bar near Waterloo station called Vaulty Towers. What is even cooler is what you will find underneath… Behind a secret door you’ll find the stairs to a secret cellar where magic happens for a very reasonable ~20 quid, The Vienna Experiment mixes theatre with magic in a fantastic way. Since it is such a small venue, tickets are limited and chances are good you’ll get to take part in the show! The story starts with two men talking about a mysterious event and their work in paranormal science. We are told a story about tragic death and mystery, and throughout the storytelling unexplainable things happen and several members of the audience (including myself) were invited up on stage to take part in the tricks. Even if you’re not a fan of magic, the play is entertainment enough and if you feel like a beverage afterwards you won’t need to walk very far! “Went back again for the Vienna Experiment show and found it quite entertaining. It was more a like 2 man theatre with magic bits included rather than a proper magic show. All the tricks were executed really well and audience participation was brilliant. The story is 2 men trying to communicate with a child who died 35 years ago and paranormal activity was happening (the magic bit). I would say that if you like theatre and magic, you’d enjoy this show. If you like a straight up magic show with trick after trick, then this would not be for you. “Linking rings – is it magic, theatre or comedy? Maybe its none of them. Paul Zenon puts on a one man show. A monologue. An autobiographical story about Zenon growing up and learning magic tricks. The show had some good moments but all in all its is a long wait for what is ultimately an anticlimax. Personally I believe that the show would have been much better if he actually did all the magic tricks he was telling us about. The highlight of the show was the part when he was actually linking rings but this part was brief and nothing you haven’t seen before. Zenon is an ok actor but the story doesn’t compel and is way too long and slow. My friend left for a good 10 minutes and didn’t even miss any big part of the story. The show is definitely not worth £20. The venue is great though.” Paul Zenon October 2017
