SENSAS take your senses on a journey and help raise money for charity

Most of us all have the five basic senses of touch, sight, hearing, smell and taste but have you ever taken them on a challenge? At SENSAS you can do just that.

Before I tell you more about SENSAS the most unique ultimate experience you can ever enjoy within London I will explain a little about how our senses work.

Touch – this is thought to be the first sense that us humans develop. Touch is communicated to the brain through specialized neurons in the skin. Pressure, light touch, vibration, temperature, pain and other sensations are all part of our touch sense. However did you know that touch can also influence how us humans make decisions. Texture can be associated with abstract concepts and touching something with a texture can influence the decision we make.

Sight – looking through our eyes is a complex process. The cornea bends light which passes through the hole of the pupil. The iris works like a shutter of a camera, retracting to shut out light or opening wider to let in more light in. The lens of the eye then bends the light and focuses it on the retina, which is full of nerve cells. All information is then translated from the light and sent as an electrical impulse to the brain through the optic nerve.

Hearing – sound is funnelled through our external ear and sent to our external auditory canal. The sound waves then reach the tympanic membrane. This is a thin sheet of connective tissue that vibrates when sound waves strike it. The vibrations then travels to the middle ear which events the auditory ossicles which there are three tiny bones. They are called the malleus, incus and stapes and this is where all the sounds waves and vibrations are put together helping us hear sound.

Smell – we have over 1 trillion scents which is found on the roof of our nasal cavity, which is next to the smelling part of our brain, the olfactory bulb and fossa. Nerve endings in the olfactory cleft transmit smells to the brain. Plus we have 400 smelling receptors. Getting older can also lessen the ability to smell properly.

Taste – gustatory sense is usually broken down into the perception of different tastes of salt, sweet, sour, bitter and savory. Spice though is not a taste it is actually a pain signal. Taste is sensed via our taste buds. Adults in fact have between 2,000 to 4,000 taste buds. Most of them are on the tongue, but they also line the back of the throat, the epiglottis, the nasal cavity and the esophagus. They work like funnels in which the tiny taste hairs bind chemicals to the cells for tasting. Did you know that smell of food greatly affects how our brain perceives taste plus texture.

I and a bunch of community members of Love Pop Ups London Club took our senses on an adventure together as we tackled a variety of sensory challenges.

SENSAS

The first SENSAS opened up back in 2015 within Marseille, France. Since then 15 other venues have opened with more still to pop up over several countries.

Embark on a unique multi sensory experience with SENSAS which is a one of a kind entertainment activity providing an innovative and fun concept which takes your senses on a challenge as you touch, watch, listen, smell and taste.

Mulan Rouge at The Vaults get your drag on

The Vaults are back up and running after being shutdown for a while during the pandemic starting off season their with a great new production show Mulan Rouge.

Mulan Rouge is basically a mash-up of Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge and Disney’s Mulan. The story is about war, love and LGBT but mostly the show is full of cabaret, dancing and singing to hits from the 80’s & 90’s.

Simply Mulan Rouge is a gender-deconstructive show packed full of puns, all whilst you tuck into a feast fit for any Queen (or King).

The Vaults never disappoints. Other immersive dining shows in which I have attended within The Vaults in the past include Aladdin and the Feast of Wonders, An Evening of Meat, Cinders, Dantes Peak Dinner is Coming, Divine Properties and Red Palace all of which were packed with thrills, laughs and a delicious feast.

I was kindly invited down on a press basis to review their latest show Mulan Rouge where I dined and enjoyed a show full of glitz and glamour.

The Vaults

The Vaults are set in a maze of disused railway arches under Waterloo bringing immersive theatre and alternative arts. Their mission is to collaborate and conspire, embracing artists from all walks of life to come together and inspire others.

They strive to continue to support and co-produce innovative immersive theatre, fusing together art and championing unsung voices, especially those of the LGBTQ+ community. They want to make immersive experiences fun for everyone and focuses on big and current ideas told in outlandish, accessible and in the most unique way.

Their latest production show presently is Mulan Rouge which is on till 23 January 2022. This production show by ShayShay is a take on Disney’s Mulan and the movie Moulin Rouge but with a focus on gender, as gender after all is just a social construct. The show is packed full of drag, glitter and naughtiness.

The Wizard Exploratorium afternoon tea – unicorn poop, potions, magic and so much more

As a fan of all things magic, sweet treats and tea when I heard about The Wizard Exploratorium’s newest event for a Magical Afternoon Tea at theirs I just had to do it.

Afternoon tea is a quintessential English thing. Traditionally afternoon tea consists of a selection of dainty sandwiches, cakes, scones served with clotted cream and preserves and of course tea served within tea pots.

But how did the Afternoon Tea come about in England? Afternoon tea came about in 1840 thanks to Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford. Within the household dinner was served fashionably late at eight, thus leaving a long period of time between lunch and dinner. Around 4pm the Duchess would become hungry and ask for a tray of tea, bread and butter and cake be brought to her room. This became a habit of hers and she began inviting friends to join her and this is how afternoon tea came about. During the 1880’s upper-class and society women would change into long gowns, gloves and hats for their afternoon tea which was usually served in the drawing room between four and five o’clock. Nowadays however, in the average suburban home, afternoon tea is likely to be just a biscuit or small cake and a mug of tea, usually produced using a teabag.

A traditional Afternoon Tea with all the works can still be enjoyed within many restaurants, hotels and tearooms across the UK but if your looking for a magical one then The Wizard Exploratorium is the place to go for magic and wander.

I was invited down on a PR basis courtesy of The Wizard Exploratorium to experience and review their newest magical event yet for a Magical Afternoon Tea.

There is so much to enjoy within The Wizard Exploratorium from wand making, afternoon tea or a cocktail potion making class or if your just looking for some magical merchandise then The Wizard Exploratorium is the place to pop on in.

Called upon by Watson, to help him and Sherlock figure out who killed The Foreign Secretary, The Home Secretary and Lord Chamberlain I donned on my finest detective gear.

It was time for me to travel back in time to Victoria London to immerse myself into the world of Sherlock Holmes where my powers of deduction were required to solve the case of who killed the MP’s before the murderer struck again.

Taste Film immersive dining with Elf

Have you ever watched a movie and when it comes to those eating scenes on screen you start to feel hungry? Thanks to Taste Film immersive dining experts they bring a fun interactive tasting experience to their events and lately even to our homes with their home cookery kits.

This December (18, 19 or 20 of December) to celebrate Christmas they have inspired their food courses around the classic movie Elf. Just watch the movie, pause the movie at certain points, cook, then play and feel immersed within the movie. Eat bagels whilst Buddy the Elf hops around New York City, shovel spaghetti into your mouth like he does when he’s dining with his long lost family and enjoy two nice but naughty desserts as you watch Buddy help Santa get his sleigh back into the air.

As I have been nice, not naughty I was gifted on a courtesy basis from Taste Film this immersive dining experience to bring me some festive cheer during these bleak times.

Taste Film

Taste Film popped up back in 2017 bringing us diners a new way to dine immersing us all into classic cult movies whilst eating.

Food has always played a big part in cinema and the founders of Taste Film are self-confessed foodies; and they wanted to merge the two elements together and bring these films to life with a difference.

Have you ever watched a film that made you hungry? Have you ever wished to be part of the filmic world you are seeing on screen? Been so immersed in what you are watching that you want to experience every aspect of the film?

Taste Film hosts immersive dining movie nights within restaurants with independent chefs cooking for all diners whilst we sit back and be taken on a multi-sensory, gastronomic adventure, where the boundaries of film and food merge.

Plus presently due to the pandemic Taste Film are now also giving movie and food lovers 3 course dining kits which can be enjoyed easily at home. Just follow the easy instruction booklet play movie, pause, cook, play, eat, repeat and repeat.
