Escaping Hypersomnia within Modern Fables

Modern Fables brings to London their newest escape room Hypersomnia within their new location in Hackney which they have recently relocated to.

I and some other members of Love Pop Ups London were invited on a complimentary basis and was led through a world of dreams where we had to rediscover and awaken ourselves from a Hypersomnia state.

Modern Fables

Modern Fables is an award-winning escape room which is located just off Broadway Market in Hackney, East London. They produce exciting, enticing, nerve-jangling adventures that will give all fond memories and one that you won’t forget in a hurry.

They set themselves apart from other escape rooms by creating intriguing stories that immerse you right from the very beginning. You’ll meet odd characters who set the scene, immersing you in a story that feels like an adventure – not just a set of puzzles.

All their games are inspired by HP Lovecraft.  Relatively unknown during his lifetime, he has since gained cult following and his influence can be found throughout modern-day film and literature.  Lovecraft is known as the creator of the cosmic horror genre.  This often relates to humanity’s fear of the unknown and to the endless and boundless cosmos. Although Lovecraft wrote horror stories, he, like us, was never interested in shock factor or jump scares.

Modern Fables brings unsettling mystery that unravels the deeper you go and the more you explore.  Their goal isn’t to terrify you but to make you feel slightly unsettled and push what you dare to explore.  So, if you’re not a fan of horror, it’s OK, all you need is a sense of adventure and you’ll have a great time!

Hypersomnia

Your dreams have been getting stranger and more vivid lately. In your dreams, you play yourself but there’s something different about you in some way. Something you can’t quite put your finger on. Something unsettling. The past few nights dreaming have also featured an unusual symbol that keeps appearing in the strangest of places. One night it might appear as a secret tattoo, another night it might be the pattern of the wallpaper in a house you break into. Of course, you’re used to odd dreams but you broke out into a cold sweat when one night, a card with the very same symbol on it was slipped into your pocket. You didn’t see who left it with you but you have a strong feeling enticing you to investigate…

The Escapist

Your eerie escape adventure will bring you to a once bustling underground bar called ‘The Escapist’, run by the enigmatic Lavinia Carter in Hackney. For along time Lavinia was a leading figure on the New Cross and Deptford arts scene. But now strange happenings and mysterious disappearances mean the bar has been shunned and now Lavinia herself seems to have gone missing.

Lavinia does have a habit of taking impromptu trips though… but something does seem different this time.  Has her interest in her late grandfather got anything to do with her recent disappearance? Or will she turn up on the backpacker trail sipping a margarita?

It’s time to meet with mutual long-term friend Alfie who is trying to get the bar back to it’s former glory while she’s away.  Can you figure out what’s been going on?

Trapped Modern Fables Hypersomnia

Within Modern Fables I and my friends we were trapped in a hypersomnia state and it was up to us to discover who we are and escape the clutches of the evil forces which put us in a deep sleep.

Modern Fables

What is Hypersomnia? Hypersomnia is a condition in which a person has trouble staying awake during the day. People who have hypersomnia can fall asleep at any time, for instance, at work or whilst they are driving.

Using our sight, sound, smell and touch through this dimly lit eerie room it was up to us to step through this world of hypersomnia and awaken ourselves.

From opening our lockers within our hypersomnia state we started to piece together who we were which then led us on a journey of discovery and adventure but is this a dream? reality? or has evil got hold of us?

With just an hour unravelling our lost memories and retracing our steps, we had to work together to solve various different clues to escape this hypersomnia state.

Modern Fables

I cannot reveal too much but all I can say is that if you go along with a larger group your enjoyment will not be ruined as there was plenty for all to solve which is a rarity.

Most of the puzzles are linear but there are a few which have to be taken within steps but you don’t need to do them in any particular order.

What I enjoyed the most though was the technology, within this room and the end sequence to awaken ourselves.

We awoke ourselves within 52 minutes but it seemed like we was on a dream like adventure a lot longer.

As we escaped within time we were given an award of a bag of sweets which is a lovely gesture as not many escape rooms award you at the end with a gift.

Plus they won a Love Awards in 2018 with Timeout for being one of the best escape rooms within London.

Dream

Hypersomnia was a real dream with a great story, puzzles and challenges to conquer.

With the props and room being dark, it got all my senses working harder which bought a little fear and more curiosity making me hunt high and low. If you are visually impaired though this might not be suitable for you.

Plus the only downside about Modern Fables is that there is not a reception room so don’t be early as you won’t be allowed in until it is your time. However if you are early never fear as there are some great pubs and restaurants nearby to chill.

So if you love horror and mystery I would highly recommend Hypersomnia.
