I like large parties – The Great Gatsby

Grab your feather boa, get on your dancing shoes, sink down a martini, and immerse yourself into the adaption of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby where you will be transported back to the 1920’s into a world of jazz and debauchery.

This immersive interpretation of a well-loved American classic plunges audiences into an interactive performance, where you can dance, drink and even converse with the characters.

But what is The Great Gatsby?

The Great Gatsby is a 1925 novel written by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald that is a story of love, affairs, drama and tragedy which happens in the fictional town of Long Island in the summer of 1920’s. The story primarily concerns the young and mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby and his passion and obsession for Daisy Buchanan. The Great Gatsby explores themes of decadence, idealism, resistance to change, social upheaval, and excess, creating a portrait of the Roaring Twenties that has been described as a cautionary tale regarding the American Dream.

We was transported back to the 1920’s and I plus some other community members of Love Pop Ups London were cordially invited by Gatsby to attend his party.

We Charlestoned the night away with Jay Gatsby

Michael Lambourne as narrator Nick Carraway charmingly greets us all and takes us into the world of Gatsby. Upon entering through to the Gatsby mansion there is a large dance floor with a bar with the party in full swing but first let’s grab a martini or two.

As this is a completely interactive performance and with so many scenes going on at once you never quite know which scene you might see as throughout the play portions of the audience are taken off into different spaces / rooms where characters develop and relationships are unravelled. The majority of the play though is performed on the dance floor area and on the balconies around.

However you will always truly feel a part of the journey no matter which path you take.

I got to

• celebrate with a glass of gin with Gatsby himself whilst he talked about finance,
• help Daisy in her dressing room,
• witness an argument between Myrtle Wilson and her husband George Wilson,
• plus much more.

In the main area where the majority of the play is acted out we all got to see a number of scenes such as

• a story by Lucille explaining about when Gatsby met Daisy many many years back and how he has never stopped loving her even though he has not seen here for over five years,
• Gatsby trying to impress Daisy with afternoon tea in which I had to advise Gatsby beforehand if he should stand with one hand in his pocket or both and if to have just one jacket button done up or both. Plus Hannah my friend and a community member of Love Pop Ups London had the pleasure to set up the afternoon tea for Gatsby,
• many dancing scenes in which guests could also participate in,
• got to see an argument between Gatsby, Daisy and her husband Tom Buchanan,
• witnessed the sadness of Myrtle Wilsons tragic death,
• the tragic moment when Nick Carraway tells Lucille that he does not love her, only half loves her,
• plus witness the sadness of Gatsby when he loses the girl of his dreams.

We walked away at the end of the night and left Gatsby standing there in the moonlight, watching over nothing.

Verdict

I loved this immersive play full of twists, turns and drama it left me wanting to return to see the other scenes. All the acting l saw was played out really well giving the whole play a great ambiance.

Overall for me though the escapism to the roaring 1920’s, a chance to dress up and immerse myself into the world of Gatsby was a great experience.

So if you love a story full of love, affairs and greed then you will love this immersive play on The Great Gatsby.

Tip

I recommend reading the book or watching the film as otherwise you might get lost in parts of the story in what is happening in some of the scenes. So I highly recommend reading the book or even watch the movie like me as this will give you a greater understanding.

Go with an open mind and a willingness to participate and perform and you will come away from Gatsby’s feeling like you really have travelled back to the 1920’s and partied the night away with Gatsby and his guests.

Dress in your best 1920’s attire to feel like part of the performance.
